A study by the American Journal of Public Health found 66.5% of all personal bankruptcies were linked to medical costs. With the rise of high-deductible health plans and pandemic-related financial pressure, patients needed flexible, simple ways to manage medical bills — and providers needed a better way to collect them.
I researched the end-to-end billing workflow from appointment through to final payment, identifying pain points on both sides: patients faced confusing statements and no self-service options; providers had no real-time visibility and relied on slow, manual follow-up.
The research revealed three distinct user groups, each needing their own portal:
Patients — plain-language statements, flexible payment options, secure self-service on any device.
Admin staff — real-time account visibility, minimal manual effort.
Super admins — platform-level control over provider accounts, configurations, and performance.
Four principles guided the design: Clarity, Trust, Flexibility, and Accessibility — essential in a healthcare context serving patients of all ages and digital literacy levels.
I designed all three portals from scratch — wireframes through to high-fidelity in Balsamiq — then built the front-end in HTML5, Bootstrap CSS, and jQuery with REST API integration.
The patient portal focused on a frictionless payment journey: view balance, choose method, confirm. The Stripe payment gateway integration — giving patients to pay their statements anytime anywhere.
The admin portal put the most common tasks within three clicks. The super admin portal handled platform configuration and monitoring. All three were fully responsive — critically, the admin portal worked seamlessly on the iPads used by doctors on their medical centres.
